Kuro Label Gets an Autumn Newcomer: "EXTRA DEEP"
Sapporo Breweries will launch "EXTRA DEEP", a new addition to its flagship Kuro Label series, in Japan on 27 October 2026, matured 1.2 times longer than standard Kuro Label to deepen the malt flavour.

Sapporo Breweries, one of Japan’s major brewers, will launch “EXTRA DEEP”, a new product in its flagship “Sapporo Draft Beer Kuro Label” series, on 27 October 2026 in the Japanese market. The trade paper Nihon Shokuryo Shimbun reported the news on 2 October. Timed for the deepening of autumn, the beer is distinguished by a longer maturation period than usual, which strengthens the malt flavour noticeable from the very first sip. This publication often covers sake, but the way a Japanese beer company is trying to create a difference in taste through maturation is worth noting as part of the wider trend in Japanese alcoholic drinks.
Drawing out the umami of malt through longer maturation

Maturation lies at the heart of EXTRA DEEP. It uses “Umasa Nagamochi Mugi-mochi” malt (“long-lasting umami malt”), developed independently by Sapporo Breweries, and is matured for 1.2 times as long as standard Kuro Label. Maturation is the stage in which beer that has finished fermenting is left to rest at low temperature so that its flavour settles. By extending this period, the brewer aimed for a taste in which the umami derived from the malt is clearly noticeable from the first mouthful. The alcohol content is 5.5%. Incidentally, in Japan beer labelled “draft beer” (nama beer) means beer that has not been heat-pasteurised.
For grown-up moments that celebrate “attention to detail”
The product’s theme is “commitment and pursuit”. Sapporo Breweries envisages adults with firm personal tastes savouring it slowly during private, relaxing time alone. It is positioned as a beer to sip little by little while feeling the air of the season, rather than to knock back as a toast. Keeping the name of a staple brand while changing a single element, the length of maturation, to show a new side of it is a method that illustrates well how seasonal products are planned in the Japanese beer market.
How to enjoy it in Europe
The primary source reports only a release in Japan, and no plans for sales in Europe have been announced. If you would like to try it, the quickest route is to check stock information from specialist shops and importers that handle Japanese food and drink. Should you get the chance, pour it into a tall glass without chilling it too much, and notice how the malt flavour comes across in the first sip. It should also pair easily with European autumn dishes such as roasted chestnuts, sautéed mushrooms and roast meat. That a major Japanese brewer is making “long maturation” the axis of novelty also offers a clue to the state of Japanese alcohol-making today.
